Fire Prevention

The Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) is comprised of three fire investigators. There are three primary branches: Inspections and Code Enforcement, Fire Investigation, and Public Education.

INSPECTIONS AND CODE ENFORCEMENT

The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for enforcing fire codes, which we achieve through conducting building inspections, and reviewing construction plans for Life Safety Code. The enforcement of fire codes helps to ensure the quality and safety of commercial building structures.

The Fire Prevention Bureau has numerous duties, which include: plan review and inspection of new construction and remodels of occupancies, new business licenses, renewal of/new liquor licenses, and the hazardous materials team. The FPB also oversees the inspection of all commercial properties, schools, and public buildings that are assigned to the fire companies.

FIRE INVESTIGATION

A select group of DFD firefighters are also the Department’s Fire Investigators. This group is responsible for investigating the origin and cause of all fire incidents and explosions that occur within the City. As a part of this role, investigators prepare detailed fire investigation reports and NFIRS reports (National Fire Incident Reporting System) for these incidents. In addition, Investigators are responsible for the collection of evidence and for providing testimony in court when subpoenaed for a case. Some of the Fire Investigators are also certified law enforcement officers that work cooperatively with the Davenport Police Department to make arrests for arson cases.

PUBLIC EDUCATION

The Fire Prevention Bureau has a Public Education Officer who oversees all the life safety programs offered by the Davenport Fire Department.

The Public Education Officer's responsibilities may include determining the need for and implementing life safety programs, as well as the scheduling of life safety events such as stations tours, fire safety talks involving the smoke house, school talks, parade participation, and community service events.
