Davenport testing a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon at Intersection

Motorists should always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. However, in some cases, crosswalks aren’t sufficiently visible for drivers. To enhance pedestrian safety, Davenport is testing a new device at the 2nd and Perry Streets crosswalk. The Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) flashes when pedestrians push the button to indicate the crosswalk is in use, increasing driver awareness of and yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The RRFB was installed at this location as a targeted pedestrian safety improvement following the removal of an unwarranted traffic signal. While the City is not currently looking at additional locations for RRFB use, it may consider RRFB use at other locations.  Locations, where RRFB might be installed, are those with marked crosswalks that do not meet MUTCD criteria for traffic signals, four-way stops, and preferably only two lanes of travel.
